‘Set me as a seal upon your heart… For love is as strong as death.’ The soaring melodies of Wagner lead into Strauss’s calm acceptance of death in his final completed work Four Last Songs, for which the London Schools Symphony Orchestra are joined by Guildhall School Musician Olivia Boen. A dramatic second half ensues, with Tchaikovsky’s gripping symphonic snapshot of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, before Stravinsky’s fantastical ballet music rises from the ashes in a triumphant end to the evening.
Energy and enthusiasm light up the LSSO, as new members join returning students to open their new season. These young players highlight the impact and importance of access to music education, learning the disciplines of playing in a large orchestra alongside a soloist.
